After the departure of the Anasazi, little is known of the canyon country for the next few centuries. In time, the Utes ranged over northern Glen Canyon from their domains in the mountains of Colorado and eastern Utah, and the Southern Paiutes staked out its southern reaches. Sometime after 1776, the Navajo began moving westward to compete with the Paiutes, particularly in the area east of the Colorado and south of the San Juan. Eventually, this area was added to the Navajo Reservation, the largest in the United States, which today borders the southeastern section of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
